Fourth of July orations, 1801-1862.

A collection of orations, toasts, and other materials related to local celebrations commemorating United States independence from Great Britain. The orations were generally delivered by prominent individuals of the community or some other notable dignitary. The content of these addresses tends to be quite patriotic. In addition to the orations, this collection includes a letter written by William Henry Burleigh, a noted journalist and reformer. This letter, addressed to G.H. Fowler, concerns Burleigh's speaking engagement in Hamden, CT on Independence Day in 1849. Another interesting item is a circular invitation for the Fourth of July celebration in Leicester, MA, 1849.
